San Diego makes for an amazing summer vacation. Not only is the weather amazing, but there’s so much to do in the area, whether you love to be outside or prefer indoor cultural attractions. With so much to do in the area during the summer months, it can be difficult to narrow down the best activities and attractions. Here’s what you should make time to see and do in San Diego over the summer.
Comic-Con is one of the world’s biggest and most vibrant conventions, and even if you’re not a stereotypical nerd, there’s still a lot to enjoy. The convention hosts a huge range of events and parties, and even if you don’t have passes to the actual event (which typically sell out right away), it’s still fun to wander through the surrounding area. Many businesses host exciting events of their own and have promotions in the spirit of this fun convention. Be sure to book your hotel early for this weekend, as rooms sell out fast.
Eat and drink in the historic Gaslamp Quarter.
This year, San Diego’s famous Gaslamp Quarter celebrates its 150 year anniversary, making it the perfect time to explore everything the area has to offer. In particular, check out the Taste of Gaslamp event on June 17th, which features food from some of the best restaurants in the area. If you’re visiting later on in the summer, take some time to explore the area’s amazing establishments, as well as local art installations and smaller celebrations of this historic anniversary.
Watch a free concert in Seaport Village.
During the summer, you can head down to the tourist district of Seaport Village every Sunday night to take in free concerts. This is a great attraction for anyone visiting, as the atmosphere is fun, welcoming, and family friendly. You can also explore the food and shopping options in this adorable little district. The concerts range widely in genre, from jazz to rock to country and everything in between.
Go to a Padres game.
Even when the Padres aren’t playing well, it’s still always fun to go to a baseball game. The crowds are fun and friendly, and the weather is almost always perfect for enjoying a cold beer and some snacks. PetCo Park is located in the heart of downtown, with an amazing view of the San Diego skyline. There are games nearly every week throughout the summer, and it’s a great way to enjoy an evening.
Attend the San Diego County Fair.
Located up in Del Mar, the county fair runs throughout the month of June until the 4th of July. The fair has tons of attractions that are fun for both kids and adults, such as rides, local food, performances, and exhibits. The fair is large, so plan to spend a whole day exploring everything it has to offer. Although it is a drive up from San Diego, it’s worth the half hour trek.
March in the LGBT Pride Parade.
Hillcrest is one of the nation’s fastest-growing ‘gayborhoods’, so it’s to be expected that the LGBT Pride Parade is a huge celebration. Even if you’re not part of the LGBT community, it’s still fun to get outside and support freedom and acceptance. The celebration also includes a huge music festival with an exciting array of performers. While you’re there, the Hillcrest neighborhood is also home to a variety of fun casual restaurants, bars, and clubs to check out at night after the parade is finished. LGBT Pride in San Diego is celebrated in July 15th.
